Modern Charity Quilting: Easy Group Quilts for Children in Need
I’ve made so many quilts over the years that I’ve lost count. Once you get started, quilting has a way of pulling you in—and before you know it, you’re piecing together something new every chance you get. I’ve been lucky to be part of groups like #brisbaneMQG and #dogoodstitches in the Australian circle, where I’ve been able to donate quilts and see firsthand the impact they can make.
And now, I’m starting a project close to my heart: creating modern, simple quilts for children who need a bit of extra comfort. These quilts will be designed for group quilting, making it easy to stitch together as a community, even if we’re in different places. With big, colourful blocks, each quilt will be something a child can call their own—a warm reminder that they’re seen, cared for, and valued.
Why Quilts Matter Here
For many children, a quilt becomes more than a blanket; it’s a source of comfort and something that belongs just to them. A handmade quilt, created by people who care, can mean the world to a child navigating uncertain situations, like moving to a foster home or adjusting to a new family. These quilts offer warmth, security, and, most importantly, a sense of belonging.
With every quilt block, we’re telling these children: You’re seen. You’re valued. This project goes beyond the stitching; it’s about creating a personal connection and bringing a bit of joy and stability to kids who need it most.
The Heart of This Project
This quilting project is all about joining forces, whether that’s with a few friends in your sewing room or across a quilting bee online. I designed this to make quilting accessible for groups, using large, easy-to-piece blocks that anyone can contribute. Each quilt will have a modern, cheerful look that speaks to a child’s sense of fun and colour.
When we come together to quilt, we’re not just making a blanket—we’re creating something meaningful, something that tells a story. And the best part? Even if you’re making just one block, your contribution matters just as much as the whole quilt.
Getting Involved: How You Can Help
If you’ve ever thought about using your quilting skills to give back, this is a perfect opportunity. Here are a few ways to get involved:
Make a Quilt Block: Start with just one block! I’ll provide patterns and tips in future posts to make it easy and beginner-friendly.
Host a Quilt Bee: If you’re part of a quilting group or even have friends who’d like to pitch in, consider organising a get-together to work on a quilt as a team.
Spread the Word: Share this project with others who might want to join. The more hands we have, the more quilts we can create.
Donate Fabric or Supplies: Quilting bees often run low on materials, so donating fabric or tools can be a huge help if you can’t join in the stitching.
The Next Steps: Colours, Patterns, and Group Quilting Tips
In the next blog, I’ll be sharing ideas on how to choose colours and patterns that kids will love. We’ll look at bright, bold designs that are fun for group quilting sessions and easy for any skill level. You’ll also find tips on organising a group project—even if it’s virtual—and suggestions for keeping everything on track.
Let’s Get Started Together
If this project calls to you, I’d love for you to be part of it. Grab some fabric scraps, call up a few quilty friends, and let’s get started! In the next blog, I’ll walk you through picking colours and patterns that are fun and kid-friendly, with tips for stitching in a group or solo. Let’s create something special, together.
